Twenty-two-year-old Seth Thomas bought out his boss in 1807, just three years after being hired as a grandfather clockmaker in the Plymouth Hollow, Conn., shop. This set a precedent of ambitious growth that would continue throughout his career. Within a decade, Thomas had built a thriving concern by keeping his finger on the pulse of popular demand and industry technology. When his sons took over the business in 1860, many new styles were introduced. Just a few of the innovations: Spring driven clocks, perpetual calendar clocks, chime clocks and electric clocks.
